A 2 year old's party works best as a 90-minute morning or after-nap gathering with about 3 little friends, a few play stations and toddler-safe food. Two-year-olds play next to each other more than with each other, so skip games with rules: set out things to do and let them roam.

The plan at a glance
| What | For a 2 year old |
|---|---|
| Length | 90 minutes |
| Friends to invite | About 3 (age plus one), plus siblings and family |
| Activities | 2 or 3 play stations, no games with winners |
| Best start time | 9:30 or 10 am, or 3:30 pm after the nap |
| Grown-ups | Every toddler comes with a parent, often two |
| Invitations out | 3 to 4 weeks before, replies due a week before |
Plan the party around your child's nap, not the other way round. A rested two-year-old at 10 am is a different child from a skipped-nap one at 1 pm.
"Two" themes
Two-year-olds won't remember the theme, but they'll love the trucks, animals or bubbles that come with it, and the puns make great invitations.
- Construction: "Two the rescue." Dump trucks in a sand tub, hard hats, a box tower to knock down.
- Safari: "Two wild." Stuffed animals to find, animal crackers, jungle sounds.
- Farm: "Holy cow, I'm two." Animal sounds, a toy barn, a hay-bale photo spot.
- Space: "Two the moon." Glow stars, a cardboard rocket to climb into.
- Race car: "Two fast." Ride-on toys and a chalk track.
- Fiesta: "Taco 'bout two." Bright colors, maracas, a toddler taco bar.
Play stations for 2 year olds
Set up 2 or 3 stations and a quiet corner. A parent stays with their child, so you don't need to run anything; just keep the stations stocked.
| Station | What you need |
|---|---|
| Bubbles | 2 bottles of bubble solution, a few wands, a bubble machine if you have one |
| Ball pit | A kiddie pool or big box, 100 to 200 plastic play balls |
| Sand or water tub | A tub of play sand or shallow water, scoops, big toys; a grown-up stays at the water |
| Box tower | 6 to 10 empty cereal boxes or big cardboard blocks |
| Music corner | A speaker, shakers, scarves for a freeze dance |
Everything within reach must be safe for under-3s: no small parts (the CPSC bans them in toys for this age because of the choking risk) and no latex balloons or balloon pieces, a choking risk for children under 8. Foil balloons up high are fine. More ideas by age are in birthday party games by age.
A 90-minute schedule

|---|---|
| 0:00 | Arrivals, free play at the stations |
| 0:30 | Bubbles or music for everyone |
| 0:45 | Snacks for toddlers, food for grown-ups |
| 1:00 | Cake, a song, candles out with help |
| 1:15 | Free play and goodbyes |
| 1:30 | Done, before the next nap |
Food: toddler-safe and simple
The table uses Festidy's usual mix for 12 guests, 7 kids and 5 grown-ups. At a 2-year-old's party you'll usually have more grown-ups than toddlers, so set your own split in the party food calculator.
| What | How many | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Large pizzas | 4 | 2 slices a kid, 3 a grown-up, 8 a pizza |
| Plates | 24 | 30 cups and 36 napkins too |
| Kids' drinks | 14 | Juice boxes, pouches or lemonade: 1 a kid an hour |
| Grown-ups' drinks | 15 | Soda, sparkling water, beer or wine: 2 each the first hour, then 1 |
| Waters (8 oz) | 19 | 8 oz a kid an hour, half that for grown-ups; or about 1.5 gallons in a dispenser |
| lb of ice | 24 | 2 lb a guest; double it on a hot day |
| Cups of fruit or veg | 12 | Plus about 21 oz of chips |
| Favors | 9 | One per child, plus 2 spares |
| Cake servings | 12 | an 8-inch round or a dozen cupcakes: 7 kids, 5 adults |
For the toddlers: soft fruit, halved or quartered grapes, cheese cubes, crackers, pasta, small sandwiches and hot dogs cut lengthwise and into small pieces. No popcorn, whole nuts, hard candy or whole grapes for under-4s. A smash cake or cupcakes are easier than slicing a big cake for little ones. The grown-ups will eat more than the kids, so plan real food for them.
Goodie bags
Many parents skip goodie bags at two. If you do them, one per child plus 2 spares, with things safe for under-3s: a board book, bubbles, a bath toy, chunky crayons.
What it costs
| Level | Per guest | 12 guests |
|---|---|---|
| Simple Home food, homemade games | $15 | $180 |
| Standard Bakery cake and one hired activity | $30 | $360 |
| Splurge Entertainer, rentals, and custom decor | $50 | $600 |
A short home party with snacks, a cake and the stations above sits at the Simple level.
