A 3 year old's party works best at 90 minutes, with about 4 friends, 2 easy activities and lots of free play. Three-year-olds are just starting to play together, so think "stations they can wander between" rather than games with rules, and plan the party around the nap.

The plan at a glance
| What | For a 3 year old |
|---|---|
| Length | 90 minutes |
| Friends to invite | About 4 (age plus one), plus their siblings |
| Activities | 2, plus free play; no games with winners |
| Best start time | 9:30 or 10 am, or 3:30 pm after naps |
| Grown-ups | Every child comes with a parent; plan as many adults as kids |
| Invitations out | 3 to 4 weeks before, replies due a week before |
At three, the party is as much for the parents as for the kids. Expect an adult for every child and plan food and seats for them.
Themes 3 year olds love
Three-year-olds love things they recognize: animals, trucks, dinosaurs, colors. Go with whatever your child is into this month.
- Dinosaur. The "Three-Rex" invitation pun is hard to beat. Add a sandbox fossil dig.
- Safari. "Young, wild and three." Stuffed animals hidden around the yard to find with binoculars.
- Construction. Dump trucks, a pile of play sand or dried beans in a tub, hard hats.
- Farm. Animal sounds, a "feed the animals" bean-bag toss.
- Under the sea. A blue blanket ocean and fish to "catch" with a toy net.
- Rainbow. Sorting colored balls, a bubble station, rainbow fruit.
Activities for 3 year olds
Set up 2 activity stations and let kids move between them. A parent plays along at each one. Avoid anything where a child can lose or be "out".
| Activity | Minutes | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Bubble station | 10 | 2 bottles of bubble solution, 4 to 6 wands, a bubble machine if you have one |
| Parachute play | 10 | A play parachute or a flat bed sheet, 6 to 8 soft lightweight balls |
| Freeze dance | 5 | A speaker, scarves or shakers |
| Sandbox dig | 10 to 15 | A tub of play sand, big plastic "fossils" or toys, scoops |
| Sticker art | 10 | Big paper, chunky stickers, washable crayons |
Keep every toy, prize and craft piece bigger than a toddler's mouth: the CPSC bans small parts in toys for children under 3 because of the choking risk (CPSC). And skip latex balloons in play; they're a choking risk for children under 8. More in birthday party games by age.

Food: how much for a party of 12
The table uses Festidy's usual mix for 12 guests, 7 kids and 5 grown-ups. At a 3-year-old's party you'll likely have more grown-ups than kids, so set your own split in the party food calculator. Three-year-olds eat about 1.5 slices of pizza, and many eat less.
| What | How many | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Large pizzas | 4 | 2 slices a kid, 3 a grown-up, 8 a pizza |
| Plates | 24 | 30 cups and 36 napkins too |
| Kids' drinks | 14 | Juice boxes, pouches or lemonade: 1 a kid an hour |
| Grown-ups' drinks | 15 | Soda, sparkling water, beer or wine: 2 each the first hour, then 1 |
| Waters (8 oz) | 19 | 8 oz a kid an hour, half that for grown-ups; or about 1.5 gallons in a dispenser |
| lb of ice | 24 | 2 lb a guest; double it on a hot day |
| Cups of fruit or veg | 12 | Plus about 21 oz of chips |
| Favors | 9 | One per child, plus 2 spares |
| Cake servings | 12 | an 8-inch round or a dozen cupcakes: 7 kids, 5 adults |
Choose food that's safe for under-4s: halved grapes, cherry tomatoes cut in quarters, hot dogs cut lengthwise and into small pieces, soft fruit, crackers, cheese cubes. Leave out popcorn, whole nuts and hard candy entirely. Put the grown-ups' snacks on a separate table. Ask about allergies on the RSVP.
Goodie bags
One per child plus 2 spares for siblings, and only things that are safe for under-3s: board books, chunky crayons, bubbles, a bath toy, a large sticker sheet. No small toys or balloons.
What it costs
| Level | Per guest | 12 guests |
|---|---|---|
| Simple Home food, homemade games | $15 | $180 |
| Standard Bakery cake and one hired activity | $30 | $360 |
| Splurge Entertainer, rentals, and custom decor | $50 | $600 |
A 3-year-old's party is often the cheapest of all: a short home party with snacks and cake, no entertainer needed.
Questions parents ask
How many kids should I invite to a 3 year old's party?
About 4 friends (age plus one), plus their siblings. With a parent for each child, that's already 10 or more people.
How long should a 3 year old's birthday party be?
90 minutes. Start after breakfast or after naps so nobody is tired or hungry when the candles come out.
What games can 3 year olds play at a party?
Not really games yet: activities like bubbles, parachute play, freeze dance and a sandbox dig, where everyone joins in and nobody loses.
